Even though most people like to underestimate moving in general, the truth is that moving is not an easy thing to do. Sure, it seems pretty straightforward, but when you start considering all the little details, all of a sudden you find yourself overwhelmed.
Additionally, a lot of people these days seem to think that moving on their own is the easiest thing they can do and that’s the best way to save money. While many may think we are biased as professional Chicago movers, we still believe that a lot of people just don’t know what they are getting into.
However, we care about you! Whether you hire us or not, we want you to be safe throughout the move. That is why today we are going to give you some advice on moving safety and the things, to which you need to pay attention. Don’t forget that there is nothing wrong with calling the professionals if after all you don’t want to bother yourself with all the little moving headaches. But let’s get going now!
Safety Tip #1: Use Your Leg Power To Lift
One of the most common injuries happen because people try to lift heavy objects with their backs and arms, instead of their legs. This is a habit that people develop from a young age and it can be a bit difficult to overcome. Well, remember this – keep your back straight, squat down (still straight), grab the item, use your legs to get up. That is the routine you need to follow in order to not get badly injured. Or maybe you should not lift heavy objects in the first place. Which leads us to…
Safety Tip #2: Avoid Overstuffing Your Boxes
Many people do not get enough boxes to be comfortable with leaving a few half full. However, by overstuffing the containers you are only making them heavier, you are sacrificing on padding and you may actually damage the stuff inside. However, the worse thing is that you can injure yourself, which brings us back to tip #1.
Safety Tip #3: Warm Up
While packing is not so labor-intensive, the moving itself is. When you are getting things out of your home and into the truck (or vice versa) you will be spending quite a lot of energy and using many muscles. However, muscles that are not properly warmed up may get stiff, and you can even cause damage to joints and ligaments.
Bonus Safety Tip: Food And Rest
While the three tips above are obviously beneficial, you may not understand why eating properly and being well rested before the move is crucial as well. Firstly, you have to have a good night’s sleep before intense work. That’s just a given. Otherwise you will feel fatigued and you won’t be at your best. But then comes food as well. Avoid stuffing yourself with carbs. Go for a protein-rich breakfast, something like bacon and eggs. It will keep you full for longer and won’t cause energy spikes and slums.
