Have you ever heard about minimalism? This movement has been getting quite a lot of traction for a while. It is basically the idea to cut down on things in your life that only clutter up your space without giving you any joy whatsoever. But what happens when you cut down on stuff a whole lot? Your big house may all of a sudden feel empty.
That isn’t necessarily a bad thing. People actually decide to do it, because that means they can move to a smaller space and still feel great about themselves. Not only that, but it gets them to save some money, cut down on unnecessary expenses and start living a more fulfilling life by focusing on what’s important.
However, downsizing also has its dark sides. If you do not do it right, you may end up just as miserable. Yes, often less is more, but there are cases where less can actually turn out being downright nothing. As professional Chicago movers we want to help people transition to their small houses without issues, so here are a few tips on how to do it correctly.
Tip #1: Don’t Get Rid of Sentimental Things
It is fine to have items that don’t have any specific purpose aside from being a sentimental thing for you. Of course, you don’t have to keep every useless souvenir, but if something is important to you and brings you joy, keep it.
The point of minimalism is not to cut down on the things that make you feel good. It is to get rid of the clutter that doesn’t add anything positive to your life.
Tip #2: Don’t Go Too Small
Downsizing to a small place usually feels like a good decision, but it can turn around quickly if you go overboard with it. Often we fail to calculate just how much space we need and we go smaller than necessary. That forces us to get rid of more things or just to clutter up our home once more, making the decision to downsize pointless.
If you think you can live in a home half the size of your current one, instead go for 2/3 of it. That gives you some room for error, and even if you does end up on the bigger side, you can just put the additional space to some use (like a meditation corner or something like that).
Tip #3: Invest In Good Furniture
Many people don’t pay attention to furniture. They just go about their lives buying whatever is cheap or looks nice. But quality furniture matters a lot when you move to a smaller space. You want things that can double in function and will serve you for years. So don’t be afraid to spend a little more on a nice convertible sofa, robust folding chairs, a bed with storage and so on.
